Behind the Music: A Closer Look at Thomas Rhett’s ‘About a Woman’ Album
Thomas Rhett is understandably excited about his latest album, About a Woman.
He also considers it the “funnest” and a “very, very, me album” he’s ever created. Rhett’s new album offers listeners an intimate glimpse into his thoughts, feelings and reflections. Here, we delved into the stories and inspirations for some of the songs included in his latest album.
“Beautiful As You”
The album’s lead single, “Beautiful as You,” is an infectious, lively song that not only will get you dancing on your feet but also pulls on your heartstrings as he wrote this song with his wife, Lauren, on his mind during a writing camp in Chattanooga. Listening to the song might just make you envy Lauren for having a husband who writes songs—and an entire album just about how much he loves you.
“Overdrive”
If you saw a familiar face in Overdrive’s video, it was Tyler Lankford, Thomas Rhett’s younger brother! The main reason for casting him in the video is how he’s living “young love.” Rhett said, “If you’ve listened to ‘Overdrive,’ it’s really just about that, that young, young love. And I feel like love, but it’s like it’s so awkward. Like, when do I hold her hand? How hard do I knock on the front door of her parents’ house? Like, all those things are so real. And I just wanted to have two people that were really, like, living that right now. So, I needed my little brother to be his awkward self in that video.” And we all thank him for that since Lankford is now considered a “teenage heartthrob internet sensation.”
“Somethin’ ‘Bout A Woman”
The inspiration for his song “Somethin’ ‘Bout A Woman” struck at 2:00 in the morning on a bus when the driver, coincidentally also named Rhett, casually suggested, “I reckon you should write something about a woman.” The rest, as they say, is history, with that simple comment sparking an idea that led to the creation of the 10th track in his latest album.
“All the Bars are Closed”
Rhett described “All the Bars are Closed” as “a really good representation of where my wife and I are at in our marriage relationship.” He explained, “The best way that I could describe, if my alarm were to go out downtown, after things are closed, it doesn’t mean that the night has to be over. And that’s the kind of where we are at in our relationship right now.” Now that the kids are all in school, he and Lauren are finding time to rekindle their romance.
“What Could Go Right?”
Talk about successfully getting out of the friend zone! “What Could Go Right?” is when Rhett ruins his friendship with Lauren after admitting that he’s been in love with her since he was 16 years old. Swoon!
Lauren naturally hesitated at the beginning, wondering how they’re going to hang out again if things go wrong. But Rhett said, “Well, let’s not focus on the things that could go wrong. Let’s think about the things that could actually be right about this.” Rhett also admitted to this song being his “favorite track on the record.” Obviously.
About a Woman is an album that made Rhett “get back to the root of why he loves to make music.” As fans listen to these songs, they’ll experience the emotions, stories, and inspirations that made Rhett the man and the artist that he is now.
