In the Studio with Dustin Lynch: The Stories Behind His Songs
From November 25-29, Dustin Lynch is Kelly Ford’s Backstage Country co-host! Throughout the week, Lynch will be playing the latest country music hits and talking about the stories behind his songs.
Dustin Lynch’s “Chevrolet” featuring Jelly Roll
Featuring Jelly Roll, “Chevrolet” is Lynch’s promotional single for his sixth album, Killed the Cowboy. Lynch said that it was his producer who connected him with Jelly Roll. They reconnected and started talking about making a country music album. “We were just both in the studio when ‘Chevrolet’ came across the desk and it was just a great time. I thought that if I was going to do an interpretation of [the Dobie Gray classic song] ‘Drift Away’ called ‘Chevrolet,’ I probably needed a compadre. So, I asked him to be on it and he was totally down to do it.”
Ford asked Lynch whether the crowd knew if “Chevrolet” was kind of a sample of “Drift Away.” “Yeah, I didn’t know what to expect, honestly with the crowd this summer, but I did not expect the younger crowd to react so passionately about it. Then I realized, ‘Wait a second, they’ve never heard the original version.’”
He added, “They think this melody’s mine. They think ‘Chevrolet’ is the original one. Even some of my team members in their mid-twenties were like, ‘What? Well, I love that song!’ Yes, it’s wild to think that this melody has been around for 50 years and what an honor to carry it into the next decade of music.”
Dustin Lynch’s “Thinking ‘Bout You” featuring Mackenzie Porter
Ford asked Lynch to share the story behind his collaboration with Mackenzie Porter for “Thinking ‘Bout You,” the lead single for his fifth album, Blue in the Sky. “I think it took about two and a half years of me working and believing in this song to finally get it up the charts with McKenzie. And I think that’s a testament to when you’re passionate about something. Trust your gut, believe in yourself, and good things will come of it sooner than later.”
Dustin Lynch’s Debut Song “Cowboys and Angels”
Ford shared that her favorite song of Dustin Lynch’s is his debut hit, “Cowboys and Angels,” from his self-titled album. Lynch shared it’s also his favorite song he’s written. “It’s about my grandma and granddad’s love story,” he explained. “They were high school sweethearts and are still happily married, 69 plus years right now.” He also mentioned that “Cowboys and Angels” continues to be one of the highlights of his shows.
