This Week’s Backstage Country Host: Justin Moore
From October 14-18, Kelly Ford will be joined by a country music singer and radio personality Justin Moore, fresh off the release of his eighth album, This Is My Dirt.
Get ready for an exciting week as Moore shares his creative process, the real-life moments that shape his music, and his deep appreciation for the troops.
Justin Moore’s Creative Process
Moore shared a sweet and funny story about how a special moment with his elder daughter inspired one of his songs. “A couple of years ago, she was asked to go to a dance, and that was the first time.” He recalled, “For me, as a parent with little girls, I’m going, ‘No, this is a horrible idea. No, she’s not going.’ Well, obviously, she is, and she was thrilled about it.”
He added that his wife found his reaction hilarious as he struggled with the idea of his baby girl growing up. “Fast forward, that’s her boyfriend for the last year and a half or whatever. So hey, I’m still not thrilled about it, to be honest with you. But it is what it is. He’s at least a good kid. But look, you know, we, as songwriters, we take those moments and turn them into songs.”
Fortunately for his fans, the moment became “You Know It’s Coming,” a relatable song born from a significant turning point in Justin Moore’s life.
An Ode to Those We Have Lost
Ford told Moore that his song from his fifth album, “The Ones That Didn’t Make It Back Home” is just “one of those songs.” Moore agreed, “Yeah. ‘The Ones That Didn’t Make It Back Home’ is special because it allowed us so many opportunities to go visit with troops and play military bases. And what a huge honor that was. We still get opportunities because of this song. I was on the road with Blake Shelton, and I was doing it for everyone so far away.”
Moore also shared a quick story about the line “green bean casserole” in the song. He admitted, “I fought against that line.” His collaborators were adamant that they needed to put it there. Now, Moore said that people talk about that constantly. He said, “Thank goodness they outvoted me 2 to 1. It’s an iconic line to people.”
