Jason Aldean Reminisces On The First Time He Heard Himself on the Radio
You never know what you’ll learn from an artist behind the mic when they are co-hosting Shawn Parr’s Backstage Country. When we sat down with Jason Aldean he told us about the first time he heard himself on the radio.
Aldean recalls the moment, telling Parr
“I was going over to a friend of mine’s house. His name’s Justin Weaver. He’s a songwriter here in town, and I was going over to his house. We used to go over there and play video games, like Madden Football or something. So I was going over to his house and I was like, yeah, I’ll be over there in a few minutes, I’ll stop by the store. I was going to grab some beer and go to his house. Well, as soon as I went to get out of the truck, I heard the kick drum to Hicktown come on the radio, you know, and I just shut the door and just kind of started driving around the parking lot like I didn’t have anybody to celebrate with me. But I thought it was the coolest thing ever… and that was the first time”.
Aldean remembers as a new artist it wasn’t uncommon to hear your new song in the early hours of the morning, but in this particular moment it was around 10 or 11 a.m. which he was even more excited about.
He adds, “For an artist, when you hear that on the radio and all these years you work towards something and then all of a sudden, man, it’s like staring you in the face and it’s just the weirdest feeling ever. And you don’t really know where it’s going to go from there. But, you know, something’s happening. And like, you know, you’ve reached a goal that you set for yourself”.
“Hicktown” peaked at No. 10 on the Billboard Country charts, but was the start of what continues to be an extremely successful career for Aldean.
