Riley Green Songs
“Damn Good Day to Leave”
Smith said she thinks Green’s not getting enough credit for being funny and hilarious in his songwriting. He pointed out the humor in the song “Damn Good Day to Leave.” Green chuckled, “I’m glad somebody noticed it was funny, finally!”
He added, “Well, I’ve read a lot of songs that are ballads, a lot of songs that I try to get some kind of emotion out of people. But every once in a while, you got to write something that’s just fun. And “Damn Good Day to Leave” was definitely that. It was kind of my take on a fun, happy breakup song, if there is such a thing. And it’s definitely one that makes you want to roll the windows down and turn it up when you hear it.”
“Worst Way”
Smith said that “Worst Way” is “a little spicy.” Green said, “I don’t write a lot of love songs. And I wrote this song by myself. And the tough thing about that is, you don’t really have somebody to bounce it off of. And it is a little forward. So, when I wrote it, I didn’t know if it was going to work or even if it’s going to be something I would put out. And obviously, it’s become one of my biggest songs. So, it’s cool to see. And definitely something I’m going to try to lean into going forward.”
“There Was This Girl”
Smith asked Green about his first number-one song, “There Was This Girl” and how different his career is now from when he released it. Green mentioned how he thinks “There Was This Girl” is sort of a prequel to “Worst Way.”
He explained, “There was just six years in between the two. So much has changed in as far as my career in that short time frame. It kind of feels like it flew by. But at the same time, I watched videos of me playing that song when I was out on tour with Brad Paisley. I think it was my first major tour. And when I watch that, it does make me feel like it was a long time ago. It’s a crazy thing to think back.”
