Dan + Shay: ‘Some Things Never Change’ For The Country Duo
Dan + Shay wrote, recorded, and released their No. 1 hit, “I Should Probably Go To Bed” during the pandemic. Dan Smyers and Shay Mooney were like most people at the time, uncertain of their future and questioning whether live music would ever come back. Now, four years later, Dan + Shay have never felt more grateful to be able to do what they do for a living.

A few months after the world shut down and they had confirmed with each other that they were feeling healthy, Dan + Shay met up at Dan’s house and the first thing they did was sit down at the piano, which led to their fifth consecutive and eighth career No. 1.
Ā “‘I Should Probably Go To Bed’ is one of my favorite songs we’ve ever done. I know I said this about ‘Save Me The Trouble’ being in our top three. I would say ‘I Should Probably Go To Bed’ is a competitor, too. It’s definitely like in the top five Dan + Shay songs we’re most proud of. I think it’s also partly because we wrote and recorded that song during the pandemic when there were no studios open, and we kind of just did it all ourselves,” Smyers told Shawn Parr.
Smyers continued, “At my house, I didn’t have a studio. I still don’t have a studio. It’s literally a guest bedroom with a mattress leaning against the wall. Some things never change. I’m still making Shay hold a pillow over his head, so it’s refreshing when we get to come into your studio and have this fancy [setup].”
“It was cool to be able to bring music to people at a time where we didn’t know what was going to happen, you know, and it was kind of crazy. And we were very thankful in that time when everybody else couldn’t get in the studio. We’ve always been pretty DIY with recording,” Shay revealed to Parr.
