Throughout her time on the train, Townes performed a total of 65 shows while also writing and recording her Train Track Worktapes EP, which was released earlier this year. The train has been running for 24 years and was originally built in the early 1900s.
According to the country singer’s Facebook event page, she’d sometimes perform and be traveling in temperatures as low as -24. Townes’s day-to-day life is shown in the documentary while greeting people of different communities and performing her songs and holiday hits.
Each stop and performance was to benefit the respective local food bank with attendees making a donation or bringing some food items. “It was remarkable to see everyone contributing in such an incredible way to their neighbors and their friends in their hometown who needed a little extra help,” Townes says in the documentary.
Townes explains that with her band, they’d play 30 minutes at a time and then the train would fold back up and ride away to the next stop. With six to seven shows per day, it was the “most intense touring” she’d ever done.
“I’ve always loved trains. I think I associated them with the ‘I think I can’ of the little engine that could in my mind as a kid,” Townes said. “I had a feeling before we started that I was going to love the adventure. Living on the train for fifteen days across my homeland but I wasn’t prepared for how significant this trip would be in my life.”
The Train Tracks Worktapes created along the way is a collection that is just as unique as the experience they had while covering nearly 3,000 miles across southern Canada. Towne’s EP features five tracks, including a cover of Stevie Nicks’ Fleetwood Mac classic, “Landslide.”
