Keith co-wrote “Beer For My Horses” alongside Scotty Emeric. While guest hosting on Shawn Parr’s Backstage Country this week, Keith revealed the backstory to the chart-topping track.
Keith immediately knew that he wanted Nelson to sing on it with him. “Me and William both had five number ones in our career, but neither of us had six.”
“When I worked in high school for a rodeo company, there was an old rodeo guy who carried a pint of Old Crow [bourbon] in his back pocket. And he had a big stick. He poked the cows and the bulls out to get them to the cattle out here. He would separate the bulls to load them. Cowboy had the draw. He had to single out every horse, every bull that got drawn. He would have to single them out back there and then at night, he would help him pat them down. And at the end of the night, when it’s all over with, he constantly taking a sip of that bottle. Putting it in his pocket, he pulled it out, ‘So you boys want some?’ We were teenagers, you know, we say, ‘Hell, yeah.’ And he would say, “Whiskey for my men, beer for my horses.” So I always had that as an idea,” Keith told Shawn Parr.
Asking Willie
Keith had the opportunity to ask Nelson to join him on the song in person while dining at The Palm in Nashville. At first, Willie said he’d listen to it back at his office until he found out the title. But when Toby told him the name of the song, Willie signed on, saying, “Oh, hell, I don’t need to hear that. I’m in.”
Keith’s “Beer For My Horses” was later certified platinum and was the fourth single to be featured on his seventh studio album, Unleashed. Together Keith and Nelson went on to perform it live at the 2003 CMA Awards and even took home the ACM Award in 2004 for Video of the Year.

People's Choice Country Awards: The Best Red Carpet Looks
Hosting the show tonight (9/28), the four members of Little Big Town always look great on the red carpet, and this one is no different. Karen Fairchild loves fashion and often styles the band herself. This evening, she wears classic black with gold trim while Kimberly shines in a pinkish dress. The guys are wearing sharp jackets in black.
Bravo to Carly for her frilly green dress look on the red carpet. Carly is always styled just right, and her straightened hair is a hot look for her. The matching green shoes are a plus. She even smiles, though she came onto the red carpet at the same time as her ex, Michael Ray, did.
This country legend, who will receive the Country Icon Award this evening ( 9/28), walked the red carpet early. While you can see the weight he lost during his battle with cancer, Toby looks dashing in his white button-down shirt and classic black jacket. Wearing aviator sunglasses completes the look for the "big dog daddy."
Kelsea is becoming an expert at red carpets, and on tonight's red carpet, she did not disappoint. She wore a short black shimmery dress and matching high heels. Kelsea is so comfortable on the red carpet now, and this is our favorite shot of her as she winks at the photographer.
Having walked red carpets for over twenty years, Wynonna is a pro at the pose. She glows in her trademark black outfit. She's getting a special award: the "Country Champion Award." She looks fantastic these days, and with her undeniable smile, she looks at peace and very happy.
This trio looks especially cool tonight as Charles Kelley dons a black leather jacket and his new slick long hair. The trio is matching in their black outfits, and Hillary Scott's dress is a hit. Dave Haywood always looks friendly and happy to be there.
Sometimes Gabby can look downright weird on the red carpet, but tonight (9/28), she has a lovely glow to her, as she holds her pregnant belly in a lovely long black velvet dress. The shiny arm attachment is a little odd but it doesn't look bad with the classic dress.
This girl's look has become the new look for many of her faithful followers. Lainey looked her usual fabulous self on the red carpet in mirror bellbottoms and a glittery top, complete with one of her trademark hats.
