How Many Swipes Does It Take to Find a Significant Other?

Online dating is draining, hard work, for those who have tried looking for love. Between swiping for hours, to having conversations lead nowhere, the world of online dating has become very tiresome for singles looking for more than a hookup. However, for those who take a leap at love, it is well worth the time put in on the apps.

According to a study by Shane Co. online daters were asked how much time they spend on dating apps. They were also asked whether they have met a partner from an app, and how long it took them to do so. From there, the company determined how many swipes it takes to find your significant other.

Per the research, the average American will spend approximately eight months (6 hours per week) on popular dating apps like Match.com, OkCupid, Tinder, Bumble and Hinge. Men tend to spend fewer hours per week but more minutes per profile, leading to a higher success rate when compared to women. On average, it takes nearly 4,000 swipes before finding a significant other.

Tinder Is Surprisingly Good For Finding Love

Though Tinder has been marketed as a hook-up site, 40% of Americans dating someone say they met their partner on it. Even more surprisingly, almost half (49%) of those currently married or engaged to a partner they met on an app came from Tinder! OkCupid comes in second at 34%, making it the next best app for people trying to find their forever love.

Nearly 70% of Americans have met their current partner through a dating app. Tinder blew its competitors out of the water with 29.6% of respondents engaged or married to a partner from the app. Bumble and Hinge trail behind at 12.9% and 5%, respectively. 67% of Americans say they met their current partner through a dating app. As the research shows, most Americans are adapting to the digital age rather than meeting someone spontaneously at a grocery store or engaging in a hobby.

Gen Zers are the quickest to fall in love, with over 3,500 swipes over six months. Baby Boomers, on the other hand, are slow to match with another person, as they average nearly 6,200 swipes over roughly eight months. Millennials and Gen Xers both took their time combing through dating profiles, as they both had fewer swipes than Boomers, yet it took more time to find their significant others at 9-9 1/2 months.

Women tend to be the pickier of the sexes when it comes down to committing to the swipe. Meanwhile, it takes men close to nine months to go steady with someone they met on a dating app, while many women are able to find a partner in just under eight.
