I love a tidy home. When I walk into a house that has everything in its place, a sense of calm comes over me. That being said, I do not think it is natural to put everything in its place every time. I remember a priest once telling me that a messy home is a happy home. That gave me peace.

When I walk into my garage, or even my bedroom for that matter, I become overwhelmed with the piles of “things” that do not have a home. In a few days or weeks those piles become a little bit bigger and then a little bit bigger and eventually I realize I probably didn’t ever need what I put at the bottom of the pile because I have not been able to find it or never needed to look for it. That is why I like to use the box method of tidying. I do it once or twice a year, but should probably do it quarterly. Hey, I’m not perfect.

Simplify and Organize Your Life with the Box Method

I have done so much research into how to declutter and organize your home. The Box Method is what I find most useful and easiest to do. You lay out four boxes used to organize your “stuff” as you go through it. On one side of the room put your TRASH and SELL/DONATE boxes. On the other side of the room put your STORE and KEEP/PUT AWAY boxes.

TRASH and SELL/DONATE

  • If you have not used an item or worn a piece of clothing in six months to a year, get rid of it. Would someone else like it? Then put it in the SELL/DONATE box. If its trash, then TRASH it.

STORE

  • For all the items you cannot part with, will not part with, or are saving for a child or posterity, put them in storage. You will be happy to know you have them, but they will be tucked away in the attic, basement, or crawlspace and out of sight.

KEEP/PUT AWAY

  • The items you actually use or wear, but seem to have migrated to an area they do not belong should be put away properly.

After dividing your things into the boxes: trash, donate, or sell. For the things you want to KEEP and PUT AWAY, the following gadgets will help you keep it all organized. Happy Shopping!

My father’s garage was immaculate. Mine? Not so much. We have toys and balls and bikes and tools and nothing seems to have a place … until now!

  • Label Maker

Everything has its place. But do you know where it is? There are many label makers on the market, but I like this one because it connects to your phone and you can design your own label. Much nicer than the dial and punch I had growing up!

  • Closet Organizer

I used to work in retail and we had to finger-space our rounders every night before we closed. Then I married a man who went to military school, and do you know that he does the exact same thing? My side of the closet is a mess because I rebelled. He is going to be jealous when he sees these babies.

  • Under Sink Organizer

I realized the hard way that storage is best done in tiers. When everything is on the same level, in a cabinet, it is difficult to find what you are looking for. Add another layer and you are golden.

  • Pan Organizer

Don’t you hate the sound of pots and pans and lids clanging around in your cabinet? And you know that putting pans inside pans you are scraping the non-stick coating off little by little. But what else can you do? Use this.

  • Silicone Magnetic Cable Ties

My husband likes to use zip-ties to wrap cords. I either cut myself or the cord trying to cut the zip-tie off. Where have these been all my life?

My kids are sneaker-heads. In order for them to obtain more sneakers, they convince mom and dad we should get matching sneakers. Sadly, it works. Suddenly, we have a ton of sneakers and no way to organize them outside of their boxes. Until today!!!
