Keith Urban Works To ‘Break The Chain’
Keith Urban has a new song on his upcoming album, High, which comes out on September 20, that is raw and emotional. The song is called “Break the Chain,” and it touches on the subject matter of addiction and alcoholism. It’s something Keith has dealt with his whole life.
Urban told us how the song came to life in a writing session with a songwriter he had never written with before. He said, “When we wrote it, I knew I wanted to end the album with it, and the album wasn’t even finished, and I didn’t know what songs would be on the album I just wanted to end with that.”
He continued, “It was just one of those beautiful divine days when it’s time for that song. This melody came, and this lyric came, and it just flowed.”
Keith found himself teary-eyed as the words came out of his pen to paper, “I get to the second verse, and I just start weeping on this guy’s couch, and he looks over at me and says, ‘Mmm, it must be true.'”
Urban said, “The truth about the song is that, you know, I was born in an alcoholic family, my dad was an alcoholic, and my journey is being raised in a family and whatever that carries with it to adulthood.”

The singer continued, “I would never in a million years have thought I’m still dealing with that, still processing that, I’m still reconciling with my father, who has long since passed away and never got sober. I would never have thought that I needed to sing about that or write about that. But that song wanted to come. And it’s important because my own feeling about it is that we are not responsible for where we came from; it’s not our fault. Whatever family we are born in, it’s not our fault, but it’s my responsibility to do something about that.”
He concluded, “I would like to break the chain if I can permanently. That song is far more hopeful than anything else because it’s never too late to break the chain.”
Urban talked more with us recently about his latest album, High. On the new project, he has a duet with Lainey Wilson called “Go Home W U.”
I could not resist asking Keith about Lainey's incredible success in country music in the last year or so and what she brings to the genre.
Urban listed what he thinks she brings, “Artistry, first and foremost, artistry and authenticity. Those things don’t always come in the same package. She’s just the real deal. It’s no surprise to me that she’s caught fire as fast as she has because she’s ready, and despite what she thinks, she’s totally ready.”
