These Are ‘Overdone’ Home Design Trends That People Are Over
Home projects truly never end. When I first moved into our house about two years ago, it was like stepping back into the 1970s. No really: there was no overhead lighting, there was wallpaper everywhere, and dark green walls. But throughout the space there is an abundance of beautiful natural wood, which I do appreciate.
Since then, we’ve planned a multitude of projects, from transforming the bathrooms and revamping the kitchen to reinventing the bedroom closets. While it’s rewarding to create a space that reflects your personal style, tastes vary, and eventually, someone will inevitably walk in who just doesn’t appreciate your choices.
And let’s not forget about those overdone home design trends that everyone seems to be tired of. Finding the balance between stylish and timeless can be a real challenge. That’s why I’ve been searching through social media, endless videos, and reading about home décor trends to help me figure out what’s in and what’s out.
Overdone Home Design Trends People Are Over
I decided to sift through Reddit and see what people are saying about current design trends. It truly hurt my soul to see this one, but several people mentioned barn doors. “Barn doors on bathrooms have to be one of the worst fads of all time,” one person said.
I hate to break it to those who love the farmhouse chicness of HGTV Fixer Upper’s Chip and Joanna Gaines of Magnolia, but some Redditors mentioned the farmhouse trend. One person said, “Farmhouse style in its entirety is a fad. If you’ve got farmhouse ‘stuff’ in a house that isn’t a farmhouse, it’s a trend that will pass.”
Buzzfeed asked their readers a similar question and trends like doorless bathrooms, fake exposed beams, built-in appliances, overusing the color gray, and others.
One person pointed out huge bowl sinks. They said, “Those huge bowl sinks set on top of vanities or counters. I call them above-ground sinks.” After using plenty of these style sinks at hotels, I can attest to them only being good for aesthetics and not necessarily splash back.
Another person called out the “Kitchen sinks in a center island trend.” They said, “Not everything goes in the dishwasher. So where do all the dirty items go until they get washed? And where do they air dry? Right on display in the center island.”
What are experts saying?
Vogue teamed up with experts to compile a list of “What’s in?” and “What’s out?” when it comes to décor trends. Regarding “What’s out,” they mentioned designs copied from Instagram and Pinterest, homes with a minimalist approach, all-white kitchens, and others.
At the end of the day, it’s okay to simply do you when it comes to your home décor because you’re the one living in space. Make it fit whatever you are into.
