Rucker co-wrote “Never Been Over” alongside Lee Thomas Miller and Brothers Osborne’s John Osborne. As if the song didn’t already stand out for the genre, adding Nettles to it was a perfect choice.
“This is one of my favorite songs I’ve ever written, but it always felt like it needed something more. So excited to sing with my long-time friend @JenniferNettles on “Never Been Over,” Rucker posted on Instagram.
“Now, to have Jennifer add her incredible voice to such an emotional song, you feel even more of what this couple is facing; unraveling the life they’ve built together,” reflects Rucker in a press statement. “I’m so grateful she agreed to sing on it with me.”
“I’ve wanted to collaborate with Darius for such a long time! And when I heard the song, I loved its story,” adds Nettles. “But in addition to its theme of lifelong love, it feels so perfect for Darius and I to sing it together. Both of our careers have grown and changed so dramatically since we each started out. And, as the hook sings, ‘We’ve been a lot of things, but we’ve never been over.’ This song is a beautiful example and extension of that constant evolution.”
Rucker is also preparing to release his new memoir, Life’s Too Short: A Memoir by Darius Rucker, available on May 28. To celebrate, the singer-songwriter and lead singer of Hootie & The Blowfish will also embark on a four-city book tour to sign copies and introduce the project to his fans.
In addition to new music, and a memoir, among other projects, Rucker will hit the road in the coming weeks for Hootie & The Blowfish’s headlining 2024 Summer Camp with Trucks Tour with special guests Collective Soul and Edwin McCain.
