Carly Pearce Talks Writing “I Hope You’re Happy Now” With Luke Combs
Carly Pearce released “I Hope You’re Happy Now” featuring Lee Brice as one of the two singles from her 2020 self-titled album. Since then, the country star has celebrated the track becoming her second No. 1 single and it was certified 3 x Platinum.

While it was early in Pearce’s career, she says it was a “big deal” to have Brice on this song with her and that he “just added something to it that only Lee could do.” Although he didn’t pen the song, Pearce knew it was meant for Brice and his infectious vocals.
Pearce co-wrote the duet “I Hope You’re Happy Now” alongside Randy Montana, Jonathan Singleton, and country superstar Luke Combs. The song was a “turning point” for the singer-songwriter and garnered her a lot of success.
“I would have loved for it to have been Luke at the time, but it just didn’t line up for him. He gave me the blessing to go and do something with it, but it had to take a special voice because it’s the way that we wrote it,” Pearce told Kelly Ford on Backstage Country.
She continued, “It’s not an easy song to sing for a guy. It’s actually quite easy for me to sing, but not for the guy. I just have loved Lee’s voice forever.“
Pearce performed the song live in November 2020 on the CMA Awards stage with Lady A’s Charles Kelley after Brice tested positive for coronavirus. However, they did end up taking the stage together in April 2021 at the ACM Awards, and perhaps one day, she’ll even perform it with Combs himself.
Later this month, Pearce will join Tim McGaw’s 2024 Standing Room Only Tour, kicking off in Jacksonville, Florida on March 14. She has also just announced that her new album, Hummingbird, will be released to the world on June 14.
