Lainey Wilson: Her ‘Big Responsibility’ To Young Girls
When Lainey Wilson wins an award — she just won five at the CMA Awards, including Entertainer of the Year a few weeks ago — she often shouts out to young girls who dream of a career in country music just like she once did.
Backstage after she won her CMA Awards, Lainey talked about those young girls who look up to her. She told us, “It means a lot to think that there’s a lot of little girls watching and looking up to me. I do feel a big responsibility, but I feel like I’ve got it. I’m gonna do it.”
She added, “I’m not gonna step out of anything that I wouldn’t be proud of thirty years from now.”

Wilson was a nine-year-old girl when she first visited Nashville and wrote her first song. She said that she had no doubt what her destiny was, “You’re gonna think I’m crazy, but the truth is, I knew this. I knew that this would happen, and I knew that I would be here. I feel like sometimes you have to pretend, you have to put yourself in the shoes of something you’re not so that one day you will become what you want to be and what you knew that you could be.”
Living in a travel trailer when she moved to Nashville to pursue her dreams, she would picture what her life would someday involve. She said, “That’s what I did on those lonely nights in my camper trailer out in West Nashville; I was envisioning myself being here.”
She also put herself front and center in what was happening in town and at past CMA Award shows. She said, “I was waiting outside of the Bridgestone so that I could maybe be down in the pit and just feel like I was a part of this industry.”
Lainey concluded, “I knew it would happen with every fiber of my being, and that sounds wild, but it’s true. I think a lot of people around me, my momma and my daddy, knew it too. I do feel like I’m right where I am supposed to be.”
