Megan Moroney Talks Debut Album ‘Lucky’
Megan Moroney has made quite a name for herself recently. The rising country music star released her debut album “Lucky” on May 5, her hit song “Tennessee Orange is climbing the charts, she won a CMT Award for 2023 Breakthrough Female Video of the Year for “Tennessee Orange” and was most recently nominated for an ACM for New Female Artist.
The Georgia native moved to Nashville to pursue a career in music and has worked hard on her debut album, cowriting every song.
In an interview she told us, “They’re all my favorite. I feel like it’s like having children. You can’t pick a favorite, but if I had to, I’d probably go with “I’m Not Pretty” or for the sad songs, I would go with “Why Johnny?””.
Also on Moroney’s debut album is a song called “I’m Not Pretty” which stems from a personal experience where an ex boyfriend’s girlfriend did in fact like a picture of Megan from 2016. Although Moroney could have talked to that person about it, it was much more fun to write a song about it.
“I probably could have said something personally to the person about it, but it’s kind of just like, why not just write a song about it that makes people kind of laugh and whatever? Everybody knows that kind of experience and situations”.
Those experiences and situations are what inspire Moroney’s songs, each one of her songs stem from a personal experience and when people tell her they can relate to her music that’s extremely rewarding to her as a songwriter and makes her want to continue writing music.
While writing the title track “Lucky”, Moroney had a good feeling about it and even said she thought it might be the title track the day they wrote it.
“So I had the You’re Lucky I’m Drinking my title idea kind of, because there’s been several instances where my girlfriends and I will be out drinking and having a good time and the tequila starts to taste like, maybe you didn’t treat me that bad and maybe it wasn’t so horrible. And so its just kind of like a party song that’s supposed to be fun. And, you know, my track guy Messy, that builds out the track for the day that we wrote it, I wanted it to be this like honky tonk, you know, two stepping, line dance song type thing. I was so excited about the song because it was not like any other song I’d ever written that I was like, I think this might be the title track. Like I said that the day that we wrote it, and I was just really excited about it because it makes you want to like line dance in a casino. And, you know, I went back and forth with like oh, should my debut album be like self-titled or what? And I was like, I would honestly have more fun. I think building out this like Lucky world than I would just self-titling it”.
Moroney is currently out performing songs from “Lucky” on Brooks & Dunn’s REBOOT Tour.
