This week on Backstage Country, Alaina Smith is joined by Jordan Davis as her co-host from February 24-28! Listeners can expect to learn more about Davis as he shares personal stories of how he almost used a stage name, and what he felt when he received his first major award.

Jordan Davis Almost Used a Stage Name

Smith and Davis talked about how Jordan Davis almost used a stage name since he and brother, Jacob Davis, also a singer and songwriter, sound so much alike. He said, “I would come into radio stations, and we sound similar and they wouldn't know it. So, they’ll ask ‘Are you related to the other Davis?’ And I say, ‘Yeah, that's my brother.’ Universal [Music Group Nashville] wanted me to change my name. They wanted me to be Jordan Wheeler.”

Smith asked why Wheeler and Davis said it’s his middle name. He added another reason for Universal’s suggestion on using a stage name. “Remember the Jordan Davis shooting in Florida? I'm really getting on a tangent here, but they wanted me to change it because of that. But then also [because of] Jacob.”

Davis admitted he can't imagine going by “Jordan Wheeler.”

Receiving His First Major Award

Smith got curious about Davis's collaboration with Luke Bryan since “Buy Dirt” was the song that gave him his first major award. The duo won 2022 CMA Award for Song of the Year. Davis laughed and said, “When I see a clip of that, I always remember my mom got so mad at me because I stood up and immediately hugged my brother and just left my wife standing next to me. Like I don't even acknowledge her.”

Davis explained that the moment felt like an out of body experience and that he didn’t expect to win since he said, “There was a [Chris] Stapleton song [nominated]. I was like, ‘Hey, if we didn't win it last time, now we got two hammers in there. We're probably [not going to win], let's just enjoy the night.”

The “Singles You Up” singer also said that he wasn’t expecting to win because of their assigned seats. He explained, “I was not expecting. Then we did the whole thing where you look at where your seats are, and you're like, ‘No, we're out, bro.’” Smith chimed that winners were usually seated at the front row to which Davis added, “Or like the cameras are moving in towards you, and you think, ‘Oh yeah, I got this.’” Davis laughed, “There was nobody around us!”
