Jordan Davis' Relationship With His Brother
Smith asked Davis about his relationship with his brother. He said that he and his brother, Jacob, felt like the same person. “We shared a room together till he went to college. So, for 18 years we were almost the same person. I feel like I'm a little more laid back than Jacob is, but in a room, he's very...” Davis paused and chuckled, “I hope he didn't hear this. He's loud which I love because I'm kinda quiet and more chill.”
Like all siblings, they also had disagreements. Davis shared the story when the two of them were fighting over “Take It From Me.” He said, “We did initially write it for Jacob, but then he didn't record it, then he tried to come back and cut it after I had cut it.” Smith asked if things got awkward between the two of them.
“I mean, I was ‘Well dude, why don't you record it the first time? He said, ‘Well, I don't wanna cut it then, but now I wanna cut it.’ And I said, ‘I'm gonna cut it, and I'm a writer on it.” Davis laughed remembering how they argued like children about it. “Jacob said, ‘Well, I'm a writer on it too!’ It was a little weird for a second and that's been that way with a couple songs. Luckily, he decided to just write songs, and now we don't have to fight about that anymore."
He added, "And it's done well. But that's what I really remember about ‘Take It From Me,’ that struggle of, ‘Wait, whose song is this? Is it your song, is it my song?’ But it found where it was supposed to be, and we both benefited from it.”
Jordan Davis' First Record Deal
Davis initially wanted to become a songwriter and shared the story of when a friend needed to explain to him why a record label wanted to meet with him. “I had written ‘Slow Dance in a Parking Lot,’ and I was trying to get a publishing deal, which is just the songwriter deal in town. It wasn't long after my label now [MCA Nashville] heard ‘Slow Dance in a Parking Lot,’ somebody reached out and said, ‘Hey, we wanna have a meeting with you.’ I was like, ‘Wait, why do y’all wanna meet?’ Why does a record label wanna meet me?”
He added, “At first, I didn't even think anything of it. [I asked] a friend of mine in town who helped me through that early phase, I said, ‘Hey, man, do songwriters take meetings with record labels?’ And he kind of eased it into me. He said, ‘No, man, they wanna meet with you because they probably wanna sign you to a record deal!’ And I was like, ‘Oh, God. That beats bartending!’’
