Digging Deep: The Stories Behind Justin Moore’s Songs for ‘This Is My Dirt’
This Is My Dirt is Justin Moore’s eighth studio album. In November 2023, Moore released the album’s title track as the lead single. The album has 12 songs, 3 of which are collaborations with country music stars such as Blake Shelton, Randy Houser, and Dierks Bentley.
Moore will join Kelly Ford as co-host on Backstage Country from October 14-18, where he’ll be sharing the stories and inspirations behind his latest songs.
Justin Moore: “This Is My Dirt”
Moore sid that “This Is My Dirt” is a special song. “It’s really autobiographical. Long story short, my wife and I have the opportunity to raise our kids on the land that I grew up on.” He shared that it’s an estate that’s been in their family since the late 1800s. He added, “I’ve talked about my pride and being where I’m from. And, you know, this song is specific to the actual property, not just the town or area.”
Justin Moore: “The Worst” (featuring Randy Houser)
Ford described “The Worst” as a “fun, fun song.” Justin Moore, on his part, said he considered it a “parent song.” He explained, “I think parents out there that go to our shows and listen to our music will definitely understand this song. You know, you want to give your kids better and more than you ever had.” Moore got nostalgic and remembered his childhood, “My parents, I was fortunate they did all that they could, but we weren’t wealthy or anything like that. So, you know, vacations were more like once a year. And I had the nicest cleats I could possibly have, but they weren’t always the greatest.”
While writing the song with his collaborators, who are also parents, they thought they were raising boys backwards, “We’re thinking, man, maybe they need to have some struggles and push our yard instead of sitting there.” He also said having Houser on the album is awesome. “He’s a great friend of mine. We’ve known each other for golly, 20 years or so and always been really great friends.”
Justin Moore: “Put A Boot in It”
Ford admitted that “Put A Boot in It” might be her favorite song on the album. “Yeah, ‘Put A Boot in It’ is a whole lot of fun. We wrote it melodically a little bit different,” Moore shared. He also said that they did the song and the entire album with his touring band, which is something he’s really proud of.
