Old Dominion’s recently released album titled Odies But Goodies caused some stir, not only for long-time fans of the band and of country music but also with the grammar police. The album title is obviously derived from the idiom “oldie but goodie” and when the band released the album on September 6, 2024, it didn’t take long for the grammar police with their red pens, insisting on adding the letter “L” to the band’s album title.
As Old Dominion explained to Backstage Country’s Kelly Ford, the album title is more than just a clever twist on a classic saying, it’s actually a witty wordplay on the band’s name that a lot of people might have missed.
Old Dominion’s Latest Album ‘Odies But Goodies’
Old Dominion’s latest album Odies But Goodies is a compilation of the band’s greatest hits that might have you questioning if the band needs a refresher in spelling, which Ford mentioned during the interview. But as Matthew explained with a hint of delight in his voice, knowing they had pulled a fast one on their fans and Kelly, “We’re O-D. Old Dominion are the first letters.” Ford’s lightbulb turned on, finally realizing the album title was a clever play on the band’s initials and not an indictment of the educational system of Connecticut, where Brad is from.
Odds and Odes
Aside from “Odies” in the album title, the band also told Ford about their bar and fans. As Matthew puts it, “Well, we also have a bar that's opening in Nashville called Odds. And we also have an entire fan community, who we lovingly refer to as the Odes.” which Brad seconded as hilarious and funny.
Old Dominion Got the Last Laugh
The band admitted to considering how the album’s title will be perceived, and that people might think they forgot to put an “L” in Odies But Goodies. Ford then joked that because the “typo” was intentional, she would not continue with the spelling bee she had originally planned during the band’s interview.
