Carrie Underwood And Cody Johnson: When They Met
Cody Johnson and Carrie Underwood’s new long-awaited duet “I’m Gonna Love You” will be out on September 27.
The two stars took some time to talk about the first time they met, which was at a CMA Awards show.
In a video clip, Cody and Carrie are talking and Underwood says, “So I think the first time we met was at an award show, and there’s always so much going on at those things and everybody’s just coming and going. But I remember leaving that night just saying I really like that guy and I hope I watch him do great things.”
Cody added, “You know we’re around the same age, but I always grew up listening to your music, and I wondered what it would be like to be in that position. They say don’t meet your heroes because you might get disappointed. I was not disappointed. It’s really was a breath of fresh air to meet someone that has not been affected and really stayed grounded, and when I told my kids, my little girls, that I met Carrie Underwood, they forgot all about Cody Johnson.”
Cody posted the exchange on his Instagram writing, “A collab between us has been in the works for a long time, and now there’s only 6 days left until “I’m Gonna Love You” releases! Stay tuned, #COJONation and #CareBears.”

Johnson first told us about the duet with Carrie Underwood in 2023 at CMA Fest now a year and a half later it’s finally coming out. The song is called “I’m Gonna Love You.”
Cody posted what looks like a couple of images from the video of the song on his Instagram. He wrote, “Thrilled to announce that “I’m Gonna Love You” is coming out next Friday, 9/27. Thank you @carrieunderwood for joining me on this one and making it so special. Can’t wait for y’all to hear it.”
He first told us backstage at CMA Fest in 2023, “From the moment I heard the song, and this was six years ago, I wanted to record it, and I wanted to do a duet with Carrie because I heard her voice on it.”
Johnson admitted it’s not that he is a die-hard fan of Underwood, but it just had to be Carrie’s voice on the song. He said, “I love Carrie’s music, but I didn’t have her poster on my wall. But when I heard this song, I heard her voice, and I just knew that it was gonna work out. We had never sung together, so when we got in the room and we started singing together, It was like family harmony. The only way I can describe it is the way I grew up singing with my mom. It just instantly fits, and it meshes.”
