It’s exciting to get asked to go on tour as a supporting act, but it’s even more of a thrill when one of your heroes asks you to do so.

In December of 2021, Russell Dickerson “got the call of a lifetime” from country superstar Tim McGraw. It was such a special moment that he even shared the phone call with his fans in a video on Facebook.
Dickerson is this week’s guest host on Shawn Parr’s Backstage Country, and he took the time to reflect on a very special moment while on tour last year with McGraw.
Host Shawn Parr asked the country singer to share what specific behind-the-curtain moment stuck out to him. Aside from performing his hits for thousands of his fans every weekend, spending time with McGraw backstage was just “one of those moments” for Dickerson.
“We’re just sitting, sitting in the little backstage area and Tim just finished and he comes walking up, no shirt, and we’re all just sitting there talking and he sits down. We probably talk for two hours. Tim McGraw just hanging out shirtless and we just talked industry, we talked business, we talked songs, we talked careers, we talked memories,” Dickerson told Parr.
He continued, “That’s one of those moments that I don’t think I’ve even processed that. Like, I’m sitting here next to Tim McGraw, who is one of my heroes. And in the moment, I remember just being like a 16 year old… he would be losing his mind.”
Speaking of touring, the “God Gave Me A Girl” singer is currently gearing up for the final shows of his 2023 headlining Big Wheels & Back Roads Tour with special guests Parmalee, Restless Road, and Niko Moon on select dates.
Dickerson will release a new project this Friday, November 3 titled The Afterparty Deluxe. You can listen to his latest release or watch the acoustic video performance of “Over and Over” here.
