Elle King released her debut country album Come Get Your Wife today (1/27). She has been all over TV this week, appearing on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert and Watch What Happens Live.
Elle talked to us last week about the album and said that one song in particular on the album sums up the project and her life these days. She said of the song called "Lucky," "I think it was the last song we wrote. We all cried. Because it's a beautiful sentiment even if people don't know that, that is my son's name, you know? He's a blessing. I mean, we named him lucky because we feel like we got lucky. And that song makes me cry, and we put his little giggle in the end; it's really sweet."
She added, "I'm a pretty good singer. I like writing songs. I'm an okay banjo player, but the best job in the world that I have is being his mom. And I dedicate the whole record to him because- oh my gosh. Something just clicked in me, and I was like, I gotta do better. I'm gonna give everything in the world to him. And I feel like I like he just pushed me. Something about it; he's just my greatest inspiration. And that's one of my favorite songs on the record."
King says doing this album was for her family, "I just want my family proud of me. And I just want Lucky to think his mom is cool and know that I made this whole record with him as my driving force. I've always wanted to be a mother. He's just been a joy. I feel like people know, like, I drink a lot. And I party hard, and I used to party really hard. And it got me through a lot. It just got me through a lot. And I laugh, and I say, 'Babe (her husband Dan), when do I tell Lucky how I used to be before he reads it online?' At what age do you tell your kids you were bad? You know?"
Elle King, who came to country music from the world of pop music, will be releasing her first full country album tomorrow (1/27) called Come Get Your Wife. She celebrated the new work with a listening party in Nashville on Tuesday (1/24), playing songs for friends in the industry, including Dierks Bentley, who came to celebrate and sing a duet with King on stage.
The album title reflects something a guy yelled out over her at a bar, and she never forgot it. Elle told us, "Even the album title, it comes from something some a--hole said to my partner one night. Something thrown off in a bar, intended to put me in my place… and he probably didn't think twice about it. But I did."
The album has twelve tracks on it, including her chart-topper with Miranda Lambert, "Drunk (And I Don't Want To Go Home)," and a new duet with Dierks Bentley called "Worth A Shot." King says of the new work, "Releasing my debut country album is packed full of emotions. Mostly excitement and full of a lot of gratitude because I really am just so blown away by country music fans and how they've, you know, accepted me and still let me continue to just be wild and rowdy and be myself. And it's just a blessing." She added, "I have poured my heart and a lot of tequila into this record. So I really hope that people like it because I'm really proud of it, and I can't wait to sing all these songs live, and I hope you guys want to sing them with me too."
